Calculate exciton binding energy and Bohr radius in semiconductors

About Excitons

An exciton is a bound electron-hole pair in a semiconductor, similar to a hydrogen atom but with much smaller binding energy due to dielectric screening and effective masses.

Wannier-Mott Model:

  • Eb = (μ/ε²) × 13.6 eV
  • aB = (ε/μ) × 0.529 Å
  • μ = me*mh*/(me* + mh*)
  • En = -Eb/n² (hydrogen-like)

Exciton Types:

  • Wannier-Mott: aB >> lattice constant
  • Frenkel: aB ~ lattice constant
  • Charge-transfer: intermediate case
