Optical fibers guide light through total internal reflection. The fiber properties determine whether it supports single or multiple propagation modes.

Key Parameters:

  • NA = √(n₁² - n₂²) (numerical aperture)
  • V = 2πa·NA/λ (V-number)
  • Single-mode condition: V < 2.405

Typical Values:

  • Single-mode: core ~9 μm, NA ~0.12
  • Multimode: core 50-62.5 μm, NA ~0.2
