About Spallation

Spallation is a nuclear process where high-energy particles (typically protons) knock nucleons out of heavy target nuclei. It is the basis for modern accelerator-driven neutron sources.

Major Facilities:

  • SNS (Oak Ridge): 1.4 MW, 1 GeV protons on Hg
  • ESS (Lund): 5 MW, 2 GeV protons on W
  • J-PARC (Japan): 1 MW, 3 GeV protons on Hg
  • ISIS (UK): 0.2 MW, 800 MeV protons on W/Ta

Applications:

  • Neutron scattering research
  • Nuclear waste transmutation (ADS)
  • Medical isotope production
