Spallation Calculator
Calculate neutron yield from proton-induced spallation reactions
Target Material
About Spallation
Spallation is a nuclear process where high-energy particles (typically protons) knock nucleons out of heavy target nuclei. It is the basis for modern accelerator-driven neutron sources.
Major Facilities:
- SNS (Oak Ridge): 1.4 MW, 1 GeV protons on Hg
- ESS (Lund): 5 MW, 2 GeV protons on W
- J-PARC (Japan): 1 MW, 3 GeV protons on Hg
- ISIS (UK): 0.2 MW, 800 MeV protons on W/Ta
Applications:
- Neutron scattering research
- Nuclear waste transmutation (ADS)
- Medical isotope production
