Special Cases
• Free fall (a = -g): T = 0 (weightless)
• Static (a = 0): T = mg
• Accelerating up: T > mg (feels heavier)
• Accelerating down: T < mg (feels lighter)
Understanding Tension
What is Tension?
Tension is the pulling force transmitted through a rope, cable, or string when forces are applied at opposite ends. It acts along the length of the rope and is the same at every point in an ideal massless rope.
Properties of Tension
Tension always pulls (never pushes). In an ideal rope, tension is constant throughout. Real ropes have mass and can stretch, affecting the tension distribution.
