Traditional Definitions
- SIRS: ≥2 criteria met
- Sepsis: SIRS + suspected infection
- Severe Sepsis: Sepsis + organ dysfunction
- Septic Shock: Sepsis + refractory hypotension
Important Note
Sepsis-3 definitions (2016) now use SOFA/qSOFA instead of SIRS. However, SIRS remains useful for identifying inflammatory states and is still widely used clinically.
