Cyclotron Frequency Calculator

Calculate the cyclotron (gyro) frequency of charged particles in magnetic fields

About Cyclotron Frequency

The cyclotron frequency (also called gyrofrequency) is the frequency at which a charged particle gyrates around magnetic field lines. It is independent of the particle's velocity in the non-relativistic case.

Formulas:

  • ωc = |q|B/m (angular frequency)
  • fc = ωc/(2π) (frequency)
  • rL = mv⊥/(|q|B) (Larmor radius)
  • ωc' = ωc/γ (relativistic)

Applications:

  • Cyclotron particle accelerators
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Plasma confinement in fusion devices
  • Electron cyclotron resonance heating
