These internationally recognized guidelines, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), provide a comprehensive framework for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities. While we work toward conformance with these standards, we focus on practical usability rather than claiming formal certification we have not documented.

Accessibility is woven into our normal page maintenance process. When we build or update calculators, we consider how the tool will work for someone who cannot use a mouse, someone who relies on a screen reader, or someone who needs higher contrast to read text. This means accessibility is part of our development workflow, not an afterthought applied at the end.

  • Responsive Design: Our layouts adapt to different screen sizes and orientations, ensuring calculators remain usable on mobile devices, tablets, and desktop monitors.
  • Dark Mode: A built-in dark theme reduces eye strain in low-light environments and benefits users with certain visual sensitivities.

Example 1: Screen Reader User Calculating Mortgage Payments

A blind user navigating with NVDA screen reader software visits our Mortgage Calculator. Because our form fields have proper labels and our results are announced using live regions, the user can enter their loan amount, interest rate, and term — then hear the calculated monthly payment read aloud without needing visual access to the output area. Semantic headings let them jump between sections of the page efficiently.

Example 2: Keyboard-Only User Converting Units

A user with repetitive strain injury cannot use a mouse and relies entirely on keyboard navigation. On our Unit Converter page, they can tab to the input field, type a value, tab to the unit dropdown, use arrow keys to select the desired unit, and press Enter to calculate — all without touching a mouse. The visible focus indicator shows them exactly which element is active at each step.

A user with low vision relies on high contrast and enlarged text to read web content. Our BMI Calculator meets WCAG contrast ratios, ensuring the input labels and result text are readable against the background. The responsive layout also works when the user zooms to 200% in their browser, with no content overlapping or becoming hidden at higher zoom levels.

Known Limitations

We believe in transparency about where our accessibility implementation still needs work. We are actively working to improve the following areas:

  • Dynamic Result Announcements: Some calculator pages may not yet use ARIA live regions to automatically announce results to screen reader users. We are adding these progressively across all calculator tools.
  • Complex Data Tables: Some calculator outputs include detailed comparison tables that may have limited non-visual context. We are working to add proper table headers and captions to improve screen reader navigation of tabular data.
  • Math Notation: Some formulas are still rendered as plain text rather than semantic MathML or accessible equation formats. This means users relying on math-aware screen readers may not get full access to formula details.
  • Older Calculator Pages: Legacy calculator pages built before our current accessibility standards may have gaps in labeling, focus management, or semantic structure. We prioritize these pages for updates as part of ongoing maintenance.

Testing Methods

We use a combination of automated and manual testing to identify and address accessibility issues:

  • Automated Scanning: We run tools like axe-core and WAVE against our pages to catch common violations such as missing alt text, insufficient color contrast, and unlabeled form controls. Automated testing catches roughly 30-40% of accessibility issues, making it a useful first pass.
  • Manual Keyboard Testing: We navigate through every page using only the keyboard, checking that all interactive elements are reachable, operable, and have visible focus indicators. This catches issues automated tools often miss, such as illogical tab order or keyboard traps.
  • Screen Reader Testing: We test with screen readers to verify that content is announced correctly, form fields are labeled properly, and dynamic updates are communicated to assistive technologies.
  • User Feedback: We welcome and investigate reports from users who encounter barriers. Real-world feedback helps us identify issues our testing may have missed and prioritize fixes that matter most.

Standards and Guidelines

This statement applies to content published on MyCalcBuddy. We aim to meet or exceed the following accessibility standards:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA: The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C are our primary reference. Level AA is the standard recommended for most websites and is required by many government and institutional policies.
  • Section 508: The U.S. federal accessibility standard that aligns closely with WCAG 2.0 Level AA. We reference Section 508 as a baseline for our accessibility practices.
