Fuel economy, measured in miles per gallon (MPG) in the US or liters per 100 km (L/100km) internationally, is the single most important driver of long-term fuel cost. Engine Performance Calculations
Engine displacement β the combined swept volume of all cylinders β is the foundation of performance calculations. It is calculated from bore (cylinder diameter), stroke (piston travel distance), and the number of cylinders. Displacement, combined with volumetric efficiency and engine speed (RPM), determines the mass of air entering the engine, which in turn dictates maximum fuel delivery and power output.
Horsepower and torque are related through rotational speed: HP = Torque (lb-ft) Γ RPM Γ· 5,252. This constant (5,252) comes from the unit conversion between horsepower and foot-pounds per minute. At the point where the torque and horsepower curves cross on a dyno chart, RPM always equals exactly 5,252.
Compression ratio profoundly affects engine efficiency. Higher compression extracts more energy from each combustion event, which is why naturally aspirated performance engines often run 11:1 or higher. However, high compression increases the risk of detonation (knock) on pump gasoline, which is why turbocharged engines typically run lower compression ratios (8:1 to 9.5:1) since boost pressure effectively raises the dynamic compression.
Tire Size and Wheel Calculators
Tire sizing uses a standardized notation: P225/45R17, for example, describes a passenger tire that is 225 mm wide, has an aspect ratio of 45% (sidewall height = 225 Γ 0.45 = 101.25 mm), has radial construction, and fits a 17-inch rim. Changing tire dimensions affects speedometer accuracy, ground clearance, and handling characteristics.
Wheel offset (ET value) determines how far the wheel's mounting surface sits from the wheel centerline. Positive offset pushes the wheel inward (toward the engine bay); negative offset pushes it outward. Incorrect offset can cause rubbing against suspension components or fender wells, and can stress wheel bearings through increased leverage.
