About Light Polarization

Polarization describes the orientation of the electric field oscillations in light waves. Polarizers selectively transmit light of a particular polarization direction.

Key Formulas:

  • I = I₀ cos²θ (Malus's Law)
  • Unpolarized → Linear: I = I₀/2
  • tan θB = n₂/n₁ (Brewster's angle)

Types of Polarization:

  • Linear: E-field oscillates in a plane
  • Circular: E-field rotates (left/right)
  • Elliptical: General case
