Solid cylinder/disk about central axis
Formula Used:
I = ½mr²
What is Rotational Inertia?
Rotational inertia, also known as moment of inertia, is a measure of an object's resistance to changes in its rotational motion. It depends on both the mass of the object and how that mass is distributed relative to the axis of rotation. The further the mass is from the axis, the greater the moment of inertia.
Common Moment of Inertia Formulas
Solid Cylinder/Disk
I = ½mr²
Solid Sphere
I = (2/5)mr²
Hollow Sphere
I = (2/3)mr²
Thin Rod (center)
I = (1/12)mL²
