What is Shear Modulus?

Shear modulus (G), also known as the modulus of rigidity, measures a material's resistance to shear deformation. When a force is applied parallel to one face of an object while the opposite face is held fixed, the object deforms by shearing. The shear modulus is the ratio of shear stress (force per unit area) to shear strain (the tangent of the shear angle). Materials with high shear modulus resist shape changes under shear forces.

Elastic Constants Relationships

From E and ν

G = E / 2(1 + ν)

From K and ν

G = 3K(1 - 2ν) / 2(1 + ν)
