The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is a metric that quantifies muscularity independent of body fat. It is calculated by dividing lean mass in kilograms by height in metres squared — the same structure as BMI, but using lean mass instead of total weight. FFMI is particularly valuable for athletes, bodybuilders, and strength trainers who want to assess how much muscle they are carrying relative to their frame size.
Because taller individuals naturally have more skeletal mass and greater absolute muscle volume, the calculator also provides a Normalized FFMI, which adjusts the raw FFMI to what it would be at a reference height of 1.80 m. How to Take Accurate Circumference Measurements
The accuracy of the US Navy body fat formula depends almost entirely on how precisely you take your measurements. Even small errors in tape placement can shift your body fat estimate by several percentage points, so consistent technique is critical. Always use a flexible, non-stretchy measuring tape and take measurements first thing in the morning before eating or exercising.
Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple) perpendicular to the long axis of the neck. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin. Look straight ahead while measuring.
Waist: For men, measure at the level of the navel. For women, measure at the narrowest point of the waist (usually a few inches above the navel). Exhale normally and measure — do not suck in or puff out your abdomen. The tape should be level and parallel to the floor.
Hip (females only): Measure at the widest point of the hips and buttocks, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Stand with feet together and measure while relaxed.

Female, Metric Units
Problem:
A female is 65 kg, 165 cm tall, with a 75 cm waist, 33 cm neck, and 95 cm hips. Calculate her body composition.
Solution Steps:
- 1All inputs are already in metric — no conversion needed. Height in metres: 1.65 m.

Problem:
A male is 90 kg, 180 cm tall, with a 95 cm waist and a 40 cm neck. What is his body composition?
Solution Steps:
