What Is Streaming Bitrate and Why Does It Matter?
Streaming bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends to a platform's ingest server every second, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). Think of it as a pipeline: the wider the pipe, the more visual detail you can push through. When the bitrate is too low for your chosen resolution, the encoder is forced to discard fine detail, producing visible artifacts—blocky edges, smearing during fast motion, and washed-out gradients.
Every streaming platform imposes a maximum ingest bitrate. Twitch caps non-partnered streams at 6,000 kbps. Facebook Gaming allows up to 4,000 kbps. Kick raises the ceiling to 8,000 kbps. YouTube is the most permissive at 51,000 kbps for 4K streams. Choosing a bitrate above the platform cap is pointless; the server simply rejects the excess data, which can destabilize the stream entirely.
Your upload speed is the other hard ceiling. The streaming calculator keeps 20% of your upload in reserve as a headroom buffer—network conditions fluctuate, background applications consume bandwidth, and occasional spikes in latency can cause dropped frames or disconnections. The usable bandwidth is therefore uploadSpeed × 0.8 × 1000 kbps. The final bitrate is capped at whichever limit is more restrictive: your available bandwidth or the platform maximum.
Beyond raw bitrate, your total stream bitrate splits into a video component and an audio component. The calculator allocates the platform's recommended audio bitrate (160 kbps for Twitch and Kick, 128 kbps for YouTube and Facebook) and assigns the remainder to video. A higher video bitrate directly translates to sharper images, smoother motion reproduction, and more faithful color gradients on screen.

The streaming calculator applies a multi-step formula to arrive at a recommended bitrate that is safe for your connection, appropriate for the content you are broadcasting, and within the selected platform's ingest limits.
The base recommended bitrate for each resolution at 60 fps is taken from the resolution table (4,500 kbps for 720p, 6,000 kbps for 1080p, 12,000 kbps for 1440p, and 35,000 kbps for 4K). A frame-rate multiplier is applied when you stream at lower frame rates: 30 fps uses 60% of the 60 fps value, and 24 fps uses 50%. A content-type multiplier is then applied: fast action and FPS games need 20% more bitrate to handle rapid motion without artifacts, while low-motion content like Just Chatting only needs 70% of the gaming baseline.

Choosing the Right Resolution and Frame Rate
Resolution and frame rate are the two biggest drivers of how much bitrate a stream needs. Higher resolution means more pixels per frame; higher frame rate means more frames per second. Both demand proportionally more bitrate to maintain the same visual quality.
720p at 60 fps is a reliable choice for streamers on connections below 10 Mbps. The recommended bitrate of 4,500 kbps fits comfortably within most home internet plans and still delivers smooth motion for fast-paced games. It is also easier on the encoder CPU, leaving more resources for the game itself.
1080p at 60 fps is the current sweet spot for most gaming streams. At 6,000 kbps it meets Twitch's maximum, meaning Twitch-focused streamers get the full quality ceiling the platform allows. Viewers on standard monitors and TVs cannot distinguish 1080p from higher resolutions in a typical stream window, making this the best quality-per-megabit choice for the largest audience.

Lowering the frame rate from 60 to 30 fps frees up significant bitrate budget. OBS Encoder Settings Explained

If your GPU supports NVENC (NVIDIA), AMF (AMD), or QuickSync (Intel), switch to hardware encoding in OBS. Hardware encoders add negligible CPU load and modern implementations (NVENC on RTX cards) match or exceed software x264 quality at the same bitrate, making them the best choice for most gaming streams.
Data Usage and Bandwidth Management
Long streaming sessions consume a substantial amount of upload data. The calculator estimates data consumption in gigabytes per hour using the formula: dataGB/hr = (finalBitrate / 8) × 3600 / 1024 / 1024. At 6,000 kbps (Twitch 1080p maximum), a stream uploads roughly 2.57 GB per hour. A 6-hour gaming session therefore pushes around 15 GB of data upstream.
This matters if your internet plan has a monthly data cap. At a typical streaming schedule of 20 hours per week, a 1080p Twitch stream at maximum bitrate uses approximately 205 GB per month in upload alone—not counting downloads or other household usage.
