How Archery Scoring Works

Archery scoring is based on a target face divided into concentric rings, each assigned a point value from 1 (outermost) to 10 (innermost gold). In competition, archers shoot a set number of arrows per end (typically 3 or 6), and every arrow's value is recorded before they are retrieved. The sum of all arrow scores gives the round total.

The innermost ring — the 10-ring — can be further subdivided in some formats. The very center of the 10-ring is called the "X" ring. In many FITA and World Archery events the X is worth 10 points for score purposes but is tracked separately to break ties: the archer with more Xs wins when overall totals are equal. Understanding your per-arrow average is critical for projecting how you will finish a full round. Score Calculation Formulas

Core Calculations

Every metric displayed on the results panel flows from these equations:

  • Total Score — the running sum of every arrow value entered
  • Average per Arrow — total divided by number of arrows shot
  • Accuracy % — how close your actual total is to the theoretical perfect score for the arrows already shot
  • Projected Round Total — if you maintain your current average for the entire round

Archery Score Formulas

Total = Σ(arrow scores) | Average = Total ÷ n | Accuracy % = (Total ÷ (n × 10)) × 100 | Projected = round(Average × totalArrows)

Where:

  • Total= Sum of all entered arrow scores (0–10 each)
  • n= Number of arrows entered so far
  • Average= Total divided by n, the mean score per arrow
  • Accuracy %= Percentage of maximum possible score for n arrows
  • totalArrows= Full round arrow count (e.g. 72 for Olympic, 144 for FITA)
  • Projected= Round(Average × totalArrows) — estimated final score

Reading Your Results Panel

Once you have entered at least one arrow score the results panel appears with six metrics. Here is what each one tells you about your shooting session.

The 10s and 9s counters are particularly useful for diagnosing consistency. If you are averaging 9.2 per arrow but only have 2 tens in 18 arrows, your groupings are tight but not centered — a clue for sight adjustment rather than form work.

The projected total assumes your average remains constant. In reality, fatigue and wind can shift your average in either direction, so treat the projection as a planning tool rather than a guarantee.

Olympic, FITA, Vegas and Custom Rounds

Choosing the correct round type is the first step to getting a meaningful projection from the archery score calculator. Each format has a different arrow count and, in official competition, different distance requirements.

Olympic Round (72 arrows)

The format used in Olympic Games and World Archery ranking events. Recurve archers shoot 72 arrows at 70 m on a 122 cm target face, compound archers at 50 m on an 80 cm face. The maximum score is 720. A score above 680 is considered elite level at senior recurve.

FITA Round (144 arrows)

The classic long-distance outdoor round fired at four distances: 90 m, 70 m, 50 m, and 30 m for senior men (shorter for women and juniors), 36 arrows at each distance. The maximum score is 1440. This format is rarely used in elite competition today but remains popular for classification and records.

Vegas Round (30 arrows)

Shot indoors at 18 m on a 40 cm triple-spot or full face. With only 30 arrows and a tight distance, top compound archers routinely shoot perfect 300s. The Vegas Shoot in Nevada is one of archery's most prestigious indoor events.

Custom Rounds

Set the total arrows field to any number for field archery (typically 24 or 28 targets), 3D archery, club leagues, or youth beginner sessions. The calculator re-projects your score against whatever round length you specify, making it flexible for any archery discipline.

Tips for Improving Your Archery Score

Consistently improving your archery score requires attention to both technical form and mental discipline. Use the statistics from this archery score calculator to identify where your performance is leaking points and build a targeted practice plan.

Track your average across sessions. A rising per-arrow average — even from 7.8 to 8.1 over a month — represents meaningful progress. Record your session averages in a training log alongside notes on wind, fatigue level, and equipment adjustments.

Analyze your 9 and 10 rate. Elite recurve archers aim for 85–90% of arrows in the gold (9 or 10). If your gold rate is below 70%, prioritize blank-bale form drills to groove your shot cycle before working on distance or pressure shooting.

Use projected totals for goal-setting. If your current average projects to 580 in an Olympic Round, set a concrete session goal of hitting 595 projected total by your next competition. Concrete numbers are more motivating than vague improvement targets.
