What Is a Golf Handicap Index?
A golf handicap index is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential playing ability, calculated under the World Handicap System (WHS) — the unified global standard introduced in 2020. Your handicap index levels the playing field so that golfers of different skill levels can compete fairly against one another, regardless of which course they play.
The WHS replaced six different regional handicap systems that were previously used around the world. Today, a golfer in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, or anywhere else computes their handicap the same way, making global comparisons and competitions straightforward.
Your Handicap Index is a portable number tied to your ability, not to any single course. When you arrive at a new course, that Handicap Index is converted into a Playing Handicap specific to that course's difficulty using the course's Slope Rating. This two-step system ensures that a golfer with a 12.4 Handicap Index gets the right number of strokes on a very difficult course versus an easy one.
Under WHS, a Handicap Index is calculated from your best recent score differentials, not from a simple average. This reflects your potential — what you are capable of on a good day — rather than your average performance. The system encourages improvement because only your strongest rounds drive the calculation.

WHS Score Differential and Handicap Index Formula
The World Handicap System uses a precise, two-stage formula. First, every round is converted into a Score Differential that strips out course difficulty, allowing rounds from different courses to be compared directly. Second, the best differentials are averaged and adjusted to produce the Handicap Index.
Stage 1 — Score Differential per Round:
Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
The Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) on a specific set of tees. The Slope Rating measures relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer, with 113 as the neutral/average slope. Dividing by Slope Rating and multiplying by 113 normalises the differential so that rounds on a tough course (high slope) and an easy course (low slope) can be compared on equal footing.
Stage 2 — Handicap Index:
The number of best differentials used depends on how many rounds you have submitted:

Once the best differentials are selected, the Handicap Index is: Average of Best Differentials × 0.96
The 0.96 factor (96%) is the WHS playing conditions calculation adjustment applied universally to account for the fact that the best rounds tend to occur on easier-than-average days. Truncating to one decimal place gives your official Handicap Index.

Converting Handicap Index to Playing Handicap
Your Handicap Index is course-independent, but when you tee it up, you need a Playing Handicap — the actual number of strokes you receive for that specific round on that specific course. The conversion formula is:
Playing Handicap = round( HandicapIndex × SlopeRating ÷ 113 )
This calculator computes the Playing Handicap using the average Slope Rating across all the rounds you have entered. This gives a general indication of how many strokes you would receive on a course of average difficulty compared to the courses you have been playing.
In practice, when you show up to a specific course, you would use that course's actual Slope Rating. For example, a golfer with a Handicap Index of 14.2 playing a course with a Slope Rating of 130 would receive: round(14.2 × 130 ÷ 113) = round(16.34) = 16 strokes. On an easier course with Slope 105, the same golfer receives: round(14.2 × 105 ÷ 113) = round(13.2) = 13 strokes.
Course Handicap adjustments may also include a Course Rating adjustment versus par, and in competition formats like Stableford or match play, further conversion to a Competition Handicap may apply. Always check with your club or tournament director for the exact format in use.
Understanding Course Rating and Slope Rating
To use this golf handicap calculator accurately, you need two pieces of data from each course you play: the Course Rating and the Slope Rating. Both values are printed on your scorecard and are specific to the set of tees you played (e.g., white tees vs. blue tees).
Course Rating is expressed as a number close to par — for example, 72.4. It represents the expected score of a scratch golfer (Handicap Index of 0.0) under normal playing conditions. A Course Rating higher than par means the course plays harder than par for a scratch golfer; lower than par means it plays easier. Course Rating is determined by an authorised golf association after a thorough on-site evaluation of the course.
Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty of a course for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. It ranges from 55 (minimum) to 155 (maximum), with 113 defined as the neutral/average difficulty. A course with Slope 130 is significantly harder for a bogey golfer relative to scratch than the average course; a course with Slope 95 is easier. Most golfers at public courses encounter slopes between 100 and 140.
If you cannot find your Course Rating or Slope Rating, check the official USGA Course Rating database, your national golf federation's website, or the golf course's own website. Using accurate ratings is critical — entering the wrong slope or course rating will produce an incorrect differential and skew your Handicap Index.
Golfers should track rounds from courses that have been officially rated. Rounds on unrated courses or driving ranges cannot be submitted for WHS handicap purposes.
How to Lower Your Handicap Index
Your Handicap Index is a direct reflection of your best performances, so lowering it requires consistently producing lower score differentials. Because only your best rounds count (not all rounds), sporadic excellence is not enough — you need to raise your floor of good performances.
Submit all eligible scores. The WHS requires golfers to submit all acceptable rounds, not just good ones. Selectively posting only poor scores to artificially inflate a handicap is called "sandbagging" and is a violation of the WHS Code of Play. Conversely, only posting good rounds ("vanity capping") is also prohibited. Accuracy and integrity in submission are fundamental.
Focus on course management over raw distance. Because differentials are benchmarked against the Course Rating — itself based on expected scratch play — improving your decision-making on approach shots, around the green, and in penalty situations has an outsized effect on your score relative to simply hitting the ball farther.
Track your trends using multiple differentials. Look at your best differential versus your average differential. A large gap between best and average suggests inconsistency. Targeted practice on your weakest areas — typically the short game or tee-to-fairway accuracy — will compress that gap and lower your index.
Play a variety of courses. Since the slope normalisation removes course difficulty from your differential, playing harder courses does not unfairly hurt your handicap. In fact, playing a range of courses builds adaptability and ensures your handicap reflects true ability rather than familiarity with one layout.
Under WHS, your Handicap Index is recalculated every time a new score is submitted and is always based on your most recent 20 scores (or all scores if you have fewer than 20). This rolling calculation means your handicap stays current and responsive to real improvement.
