What Is Golf Slope Rating?
Golf slope rating is a number that describes how much more difficult a golf course is for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Established by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and now adopted worldwide under the World Handicap System (WHS), slope rating is a cornerstone of how handicaps are converted into usable strokes on any particular course.
The standard slope rating is 113, which represents a course of average difficulty. Courses with a slope rating above 113 are harder than average — they penalize higher-handicap players more than scratch players. Courses below 113 are easier than average and close the gap between skill levels. The valid range for slope rating is 55 to 155, covering everything from the most forgiving layouts to the most punishing championship tests.
Slope rating is not the same as course rating. Course rating reflects the expected score a scratch golfer (handicap index of 0) would shoot under normal conditions. Slope rating, on the other hand, quantifies the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer — someone with a handicap index of about 20 for men or 24 for women — versus that scratch standard. A course can have a modest course rating yet a high slope if it contains many recovery-demanding hazards that disproportionately punish less skilled players.
Understanding slope rating helps golfers of every skill level compete on equal footing across different venues. When you visit an unfamiliar course, the slope rating tells you immediately how to adjust your handicap index into the appropriate number of strokes you receive for that round.
How Slope Rating Is Calculated
The slope rating formula is derived from two values that course raters measure on-site: the course rating and the bogey rating. Course rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer; bogey rating is the expected score for a bogey golfer on the same set of tees.
Once those two ratings are established, slope rating is calculated by finding the difference between the bogey rating and the course rating, then multiplying by the constant 5.381. The result is rounded to the nearest whole number and clamped within the range of 55 to 155.
The multiplier 5.381 is derived from the USGA's research establishing that a bogey golfer's expected score at a standard course (slope 113) is approximately 20.9 strokes above a scratch golfer's expected score for men. Dividing 113 by that difference gives the constant: 113 ÷ 20.9 ≈ 5.381. The same constant is applied globally under the World Handicap System.
The resulting slope is clamped to the range 55–155 to prevent extreme values from distorting handicap calculations. In practice, very few courses fall outside the 80–145 range.

Converting Handicap Index to Course Handicap
Once you know a course's slope rating, you can convert your Handicap Index into a Course Handicap — the actual number of strokes you receive on that specific course. The formula divides your handicap index multiplied by the course slope by the standard slope of 113:
Course Handicap = round((Handicap Index × Slope Rating) / 113)
This conversion scales your index up or down based on how the course difficulty compares to the standard. On a slope-113 course your course handicap equals your index. On a slope-130 course you receive extra strokes; on a slope-100 course you receive fewer. This ensures that a 10-handicap golfer and a 20-handicap golfer both receive the correct relative advantage regardless of the venue.
The course handicap is what you post on the scorecard for stroke play competitions or use to calculate your net score. It may be adjusted further by local rules (such as a maximum handicap limit set by the competition committee), but the calculation above gives the base figure.
The playing handicap for a target course extends this concept by also accounting for any difference between the target course rating and par 72, giving a complete stroke allowance that reflects both slope difficulty and the course's overall scoring level relative to a standard layout.

Interpreting the Slope Rating Scale
Slope rating gives golfers an at-a-glance indicator of course difficulty relative to the standard of 113. The calculator labels each result with a plain-language description based on how far the computed slope deviates from that baseline:

Most public courses fall in the 110–130 range. Resort and links-style courses often reach 130–145 because long rough, firm fairways, and elevated greens penalize errant shots far more for higher-handicap players than for low handicappers who consistently put the ball in play. Short executive courses and par-3 layouts typically post slopes well below 100 because there are fewer opportunities for catastrophic numbers.
When planning a golf trip, reviewing slope ratings across multiple courses helps you set realistic score expectations. Slope Rating Under the World Handicap System
